UPDATE:we are not suspended from the hype machine, apparently it is an issue with blogger not hypem.A
fellow blogger put me onto
this article on the recent exploitation of the hype machine's popular charts. I have to admit that when i first started researching and downloading songs that it was only through the hype machine that i started reading blogs. I used to love sifting through the shitty justice remixes or the 4 year old
Soulwax tracks that were brand new and I guess you could say if the hype machine wasn't around, I would still be typing 'techno remix' into Lime wire or downloading the next Ministry Of Sound compilation from a torrent site. I guess i have the hype machine to thank for opening my eyes to the different artists and genres i wouldn't have ever heard or loved without it. So with that said:
I despise the hype machine popular pages and in my opinion it is everything that is wrong with this music industry. A popularity contest should not decide anything regarding talent, let alone who is the best Producer/Artist/DJ because unfortunately the average person in this idiotic world lacks the knowledge for a valued opinion and normally the most popular people in this world are people you shouldn't look up to at all.
Over the past year i have learnt that the Hype Machine member base is far from a well managed general collective of musical masterminds. It seems that a once reliable source of good music has been invaded by half of teen America, a generation of social ladder climbing, no brained
numbskulls waiting with their thumbs out to jump on the next bandwagon and doing anything and everything to look cool while they wait. Reading the popular pages and its blogs is like walking into club 77 3 years ago for fucks sake.
Although i like and found humor from the Hype Machine's 'name and shame tactic' that they applied I think it is quite unfair to have a guilty until proven innocent measure, especially in a scene where image/reputation means everything and this could and probably will ruin some peoples careers. I think the least they could have done is contact the artist or blog that the artist had been posted on for more information or to discuss further.
As far as i know, we have blogged 3 artists on the list
Three FingersMustard PimpBurnsAlthough i have not spoken to any of the 3 people in this list about the truth in their allegations I find it very hard to believe that this is their own doing.
I often speak John and Tristan from Three Fingers and i know for a fact that they do not give a fuck what anyone thinks, i honestly doubt they had the time to go and make 700 hype machine accounts and heart everyone of their tracks and they are not signed so they don't have a record label junior admin doing it for them either. Mustard Pimp and Burns have been posted with great reception all over respected blogs and have rated high in the hype machine for quite a while. I don't see how they would ever need to boost their popularity as they already have a loyal following and respective record deals.
I am not saying that i definitely know that any are innocent, the admins of Hype Machine would not have posted what they did unless they were absolutely sure something was dodgy but i think it may be bigger than just the artists involved. I put it down to publicists, fans/good friends and record labels marketing departments. If i am right this gets me the most irritated because in the end it is the artists that dedicate their own time, money and ability into making the tracks and the previously mentioned can bring everything down with a few stupid actions.
I guess the point is what i am trying to get across is that being popular on the hype machine should not be something to aspire to. If i ever made a track i would prefer 5 positive comments from regular faces on blogs than 1000 hearts on hype machine any day.
Atleast you know who likes your productions and hopefully their opinion means something to you. Before you go and say i am a hippocrit, I am not saying The Hype Machine is the devil. It keeps blogs on their toes, It helps showcase up and coming artists and it does do its part for the industry. It's just unfortunate that all the good it can do is almost erased because of its stupid popularity pages.
